He was trained by Ustad Inam Ali Khan of Delhi Gharana and Pandit Sudhir Kumar Saxena of Ajarada Gharana. Pt. Mainkar's passion for traditional tabla and reluctance to compromise on its purity and authenticity makes him one of the important figures in the contemporary music world. Pt. Sudhir Mainkar commands immense respect for his deep study of the tabla. He has written a book( in Hindi) on " tabla " under title "Tabla Vadan: Kala aur Shastra", published by A. B. Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal, Miraj (2000). He has also written an another research-based book on tabla, under title "Aesthetics of Tabla" in the year 2008 (English Edition) and also published its Hindi edition under title '' Tabla vadan me nihit soundarya " (2008).
